Possession of between one and four grams is a third-degree felony and offenders can face anywhere from two to 10 years in prison. The same goes for possession of heroin between four to 200 grams, except it becomes a second-degree felony and the maximum time is bumped from 10 to 20 years.
When you start getting into possession over 200 grams, offenders can face up to life in prison. Heroin possession is that serious. Similar laws exist for possession with intent to distribute. One of the main differences is in the amount you can be fined; the fine can go up to $250,000 for the most serious sale offenses as opposed to $100,000 for possession.
