Twenty-nine-year-old Leonardo Oviedo, a Fort Worth resident, was arrested on Tuesday, November 3 and charged with DWI-felony repetition. This incident, his third DWI infraction, led to the death of St. Louis resident Margaret Williams. Oviedo’s bail is set at $150,000. “It’s only logical to wonder why it takes something this extreme for someone to learn their lesson,” says Paul Schuder, Owner of PCS Bail Bonds. “The laws on driving while intoxicated are in place for a reason and this is the worst example of why it’s not good to get behind a wheel under the influence of any substance.”
Oviedo was already out on bond for a prior DWI offense, though he subsequently skipped his trial, forfeiting the former bail. Even before this arrest, Oviedo had already served time for vehicle theft and causing injury to an elder person. He was sentenced to six years beginning in 2011 and released in 2013 under the stipulation of supervision.
“Judging by his record, he has not seemed to have learned anything from his past offenses,” Schuder adds. “This is partly why this bail is set at the six-figure amount. This individual has shown a history of illegal behavior revolving around impaired driving and has previously caused injury to another citizen.”
Oviedo had fled the scene of this most recent crash and was arrested soon after at his home. The State of Texas has charged Oviedo with murder and he will appear in court to begin trial on November 18.
“There are so many more charges that can and probably are already being attached to this case,” Schuder concludes. “It’s terrible that it takes this many incidents for someone like this to be put in jail.
